MARGAN FAMILY WINEGROWERS

Lower Hunter, Australia
The Margans started with just the one vineyard at the beautiful Broke-Fordwich subregion of the Hunter Valley, which was planted in 1989 while Andrew still worked for Tyrrells. The first vintage for the Margan brand was 1997. A state of the art winery was completed on the Margan “Ceres Hill” property in time for the 1998 vintage. The winery has been built to handle up to 700 tons of fruit using only the best equipment available to make wines of outstanding varietal definition. The wines are carefully hand crafted under the winemaking skills of Andrew Margan. With over 25 vintages of experience both in Australia (specifically Tyrrell’s Wines), and in Europe, Andrew Margan combines his understanding of vineyard management with his winemaking expertise to craft wines of individual character and finesse.
The Margans now own four vineyards – three in Broke-Fordwich and one near Belford, in the Hunter region. The grapes are selected from the Margan vineyards and local Broke Fordwich growers on the basis of flavor. The six varietals produced under the Margan label have been selected as the best varietals the Hunter Valley can produce. All the vineyards selected are low yielding (average of 2 tons per acre) which assists in gaining intense varietal fruit flavors in the finished wines. The wines are produced in the Margan winery using methods that preserve those flavors, allowing the wine lover to appreciate the regional varietal definition of the wines.
There is little argument that the wine styles from the Hunter Valley of Australia are certainly distinctive and often different. The Hunter Valley is one of the few places where wine is made characterized by a warm, maritime climate. This climate generally produces ripe grapes that transform into rich, full-bodied wines with a softness that makes them a pleasure to drink.
The varietal definition that comes from this climate can be lost if viticultural management and winemaking practices are not adapted to the conditions. The use of modern techniques in both these fields are employed by Andrew Margan to ensure the best varietal definition is created from all grapes used for the Margan brand. Soft easy drinking wines with concentration on fruit flavor are the key to the wines of Andrew Margan. Oak is used only where necessary to enhance the complexity of the wine. The goal is to produce wines that are ready to drink upon release and match perfectly with food.
Lisa Margan, wife to Andrew and mother of three, provides the backup marketing role for the Margan brand. This allows Andrew & Lisa total control of their product from the vineyard through to the end user. This control gives the Margan brand the opportunity to produce stylishly packaged wines of premium quality at exceptionally reasonable prices.
The goal of Margan Family Winegrowers is to be considered by the Australian market as a family-run company consistently producing some of the best Hunter Valley varietals, from the Broke Fordwich sub-region, available in the market.
