Konrad wines we sell
Marlborough, New Zealand
The company is owned by Konrad and Sigrun Hengstler. They originally migrated from Germany to Australia and then, having decided to become involved in the wine industry, made the move to New Zealand to plant Sauvignon Blanc grapes in Marlborough. Other varietals were later added, including Riesling and Pinot Noir, the ideal red grape to suit the diurnal climate of Marlborough. All their wines are certified for Sustainable Winegrowing, certified by Wine NZ Winegrowing. From the 2013 vintage Konrad Sauvignon Blanc is fully organically certified by Bio Gro New Zealand. All other Konrad Wines, such as the 2 Rieslings, Gewurtztraminer, Gruener Veltliner, Pinot Noir and Sigrun Dessert wine will be fully certified for organic as from the 2014 vintage. Realizing the great potential for these wines to be exported, the company now sells to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom and United States of America.
The office and site are located in the Waihopai Valley, which affords magnificent views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The two company-owned vineyards are located in the heart of the Marlborough wine growing region at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The sites, one in the Wairau Valley (20 hectares) and the other in the Waihopai Valley (10 Hectares) have been planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Noir since 1996.
The Wairau Valley vineyard on Foxes Island represents a very warm site producing early ripening wines. Waihopai Valley, being much closer to the frost line, can typically be put into the category of cool climate vineyards. The wines of Konrad & Co. are selected from the two sites and blended to achieve an optimum balance between rich, ripe flavors and fresh acidity. The outstanding flavors have so far produced award-winning wines, selected for medals in Auckland, London, and Singapore.
With longer average sunshine hour than any other part of the country and the free draining silty alluvial loam, the terroir is superbly suited to viticulture. Plants are irrigated throughout summer and trained on a vertical shoot positioning trellis. In early spring, the Waihopai Valley vineyard is exposed to frost, therefore frost protection through an overhead sprinkling system has been installed. Reduced spray programs and focus on traditional techniques, such as shoot thinning and leaf and fruit plucking, are evidence of the company’s commitment to vineyard controlled quality.
Some of the awards they’ve earned include Runner-up for Best Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand at the Air NZ Challenge, Best Dessert Wine in New Zealand two years later at the same event, and Wine Spectator’s Top Wine in the 2003 category review.
To fully understand the quality-driven philosophy of the company, please try the wines – nothing can be more convincing!
